Sleep - The Roots
First-listen thoughts:
Undun is The Roots first concept album to date.
The album on the whole has a relaxed yet somber feel to it at times. While most tracks follow a similar sounding verse-hook-verse structure, the four instrumental movements at the end remind you that The Roots are truly musicians first. There are quite a few guest rappers, but they add a nice flip side of the coin to Black Thought’s insuperable style of painting a struggle from the soul. One wouldn’t need to even hear Black Thought to know when his verse is up in the song; as it is unmistakable in the lyrics themselves:
“ Insomniac, bad dreams got me losing sleep
I’m dead tired, my mind playing tricks, deceit
A face in the glass, unable to admit defeat
All that I am, all that I was is history
The past unraveled, adding insult to this injury”
After my first listen, i’m pleased with the new album. Not because it’s my favorite, but because it holds its own. Undun has a warming personality, and a fighter head-bobbing flow that carries you from Dun to Finality.
